At noon on October 28, 2024, the 47th “Zhushanlunjian forum” Outstanding Alumni Lecture was successfully held in Room A203, Building E1, Zijin Gang Campus.
We invited Chen Hang, an alumna of CKC the Mixed Class in 1996, as the keynote speaker. She is currently a professor of Computer Science and a Senior Associate Provost for the First Teaching Program at North Carolina State University (NCSU) . She also serves as the Chair of the Council of the Chairpersons of the CCADP, and an Outstanding Researcher of the AASCU Millennium Leadership Initiative. Drawing from her own academic and professional experiences, she shared valuable insights and growth lessons with students. Ms. Wei Yudi, the liaison for the Chu Kochen Honors College, also attended this event.
Opening Remarks
In her opening remarks, Ms. Wei Yudi first expressed her gratitude to Chen for traveling across the globe to return to her alma mater and for taking the time to deliver this lecture. She then provided an introduction to Chen Hang's experiences, encouraging students to reflect thoughtfully, ask questions actively, and gain valuable insights from her sharing.
Sharing by the Distinguished Guest
Alumna Chen Hang began the lecture by sharing her learning experiences and insights with students. Through a series of precious photos and touching stories, she took the students on a journey through her personal growth, emphasized the importance of interdisciplinary studies and educational innovation. She also expressed her gratitude to the Mixed Class for laying the foundation of her comprehensive abilities through its general education. She encouraged the students to find their own directions guided by what we like, what we are good at, and what society needs.
Beginning with “the exceptional abilities required in society”, Alumna Chen Hang elaborated on the top ten soft skills in jobs that are most valued by enterprises in the next three years. She pointed out the shift from T-shaped talents to zigzag-shaped talents that society demands, and thus put forward requirements for students to build a broad knowledge base and delve deeply into professional skills. During the session, Alumna Chen Hang learned about the current curriculum settings of the students in Chu Kochen Honors College by asking them questions and expressed great affirmation about it.
Chen Hang gave four suggestions for the future development of the students. First, build good interpersonal relationships. Second, minimize external distractions and avoid fragmented knowledge intake. Third, maintain curiosity and engage with talents from different fields to broaden your knowledge base. Finally, follow your own path and tell your own story. Chen inspired the students with the famous quote from Martin Luther King, "we are all stories in the end".
Epilogue
Ms. Wei Yudi presented a souvenir to Alumna Chen Hang, expressing gratitude for the inspiring talk and valuable insights she shared with the students.
Through the sharing and inspiration of Senior Chen Hang, it is believed that the students of Chu Kochen Honors College have received profound guidance and insights for their future learning and development. The road ahead may be long, but as long as we keep moving forward, we CKCers will undoubtedly have a promising future. —— The 47th Zhushanlunjian Forum Outstanding Alumni Lecture came to a successful end.
