"The Friend of Freshmen" | Autumn Breeze, CKC Sailing Far - A Review of Activities in the Bard Year Class, the Science Class, and the Foundation Class
As a student of CKC, you must be familiar with the name "The Friend of Freshmen". The dormitory contact system of Zhejiang University's "The Friend of Freshmen" is a work system where faculty and staff, especially outstanding faculty and staff,establish connections with first-year undergraduate students in their dormitories to provide academic guidance and ideological and political education.
Let's take a look at how the students of CKC communicated with their "The Friend of Freshmen" at the beginning of the new semester!
Breeze blew gently with osmanthus spread its fragrance over the world, sun shone warmly with relationship enhanced in the autumn. On the afternoon of September 24, 2023, Li Nian, Lin Han, Tian Yishu and Shi Yu, four freshmen from dormitory 6-321, had a nice time with Professor Feng Zhiying, drinking coffee, touring museum and taking photos together.
Professor Feng started a long conversation with freshmen, figuring out their confusions to help them soon adapt to the life in university. With the arrival of the Mid-Autumn Festival and the National Holiday, Professor Feng give the freshmen the well-made mooncake as presents, and the freshmen also send the greeting cards, letter, and the Origami of the angle in white, all made by themselves, to Professor Feng in return. Small as the gifts were, the bond contained in them were profound. In the conversation, they were surprised found they have a common interest——Chinese classic culture, so they made an appointment to visit the art museum and they all immersed themselves in the culture based in Song Dynasty. And from Feng’s wide interest, freshmen also learned the importance of adjusting the pace of life and balancing work and rest, which will continuously help them plough on the way of medicine. Finally, freshmen and Professor Feng took photos in front of the gate of the art museum. After that, freshmen all posted this unforgettable experience in the friend circle and felt lucky to befriend with Professor Feng, who are so gentle and knowledgeable.
Professor Feng Zhiying, the director of pain department of First Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University School of Medicine, has been awarded with titles of “famous doctor of China·Young emerging talents” and “doctor with a caring heart” etc. She has been working in the field of pain clinical teaching for more than twenty years, with the purpose of “patient centered”, studying assiduously and actively exploring new technologies. The four freshmen was curious about the study of pain and were long for medicine. They also respected the exquisite medical skills and noble medical ethics of Professor Feng, so they took the chance to make an appointment with Professor Feng and selected days to visit medical college with Professor Feng , feeling the charm of medical more closely.
On September 25, 2023, students from Room 657 in Building 7 by the Yuhu Lake had a meet-and-greet lunch with the "The Friend of Freshmen" teacher, Wu Genfu, at the Yinquan Restaurant.
The atmosphere of the event was very harmonious. The teacher humorously expressed concern for our physical and financial condition and gave us warm reminders about how to balance academic work and various student activities according to directions of future development. He pointed out that if one wants to pursue a career in scientific research, it is still essential to consolidate basic knowledge during university, and student activities should only play a side role. At the same time, the teacher also offered specific suggestions for our time-sensitive class presentations, noting that the PowerPoint slides should be engaging and should complement rather than simply overlap with the content being presented to achieve an organic integration.Furthermore, stemming from our classroom report, we engaged in a mini academic discussion about why fungi that originated at a certain time and place and under certain environmental conditions have the ability to become melanized and utilize radiation in high-radiation environments.
After this event, we felt the warmth of the "The Friend of Freshmen" program. We gained a clearer understanding of everything from future planning to how to present what we've learned in class. We now have a preliminary vision for future scientific research exploration and we are looking forward to meeting with the teacher again!
Professor Zhang Zhengping
On September 27, Zhou Yuxi, Zhu Xiaoyue, Chen Yuhan and Sun Cantai from 524 dormitory of YuHu building6, met with the "The Friend of Freshmen" for the first time. It is a great honor to have an in-depth communication with professor Zhang Zhengping from the School of History.
The conversation began in a harmonious atmosphere. First of all, the teacher had a deeper understanding of the students through their self-introduction. Then, the teacher guided us students' study and life from the aspects of future development and interests, and also guided us to make rational planning for future development, so that we had a clearer understanding of the professional prospect and development direction.
We asked Teacher Zhang a lot of questions about the major, such as how to balance the professional learning and our own quality as students trained by the strengthening basic disciplines plan ;how to adapt to the study of humanities in college as soon as possible; what qualities are needed to study Chinese language and history subjects and so on. Teacher Zhang gave us a very careful and concerned reply, and taught us a lot of experience to improve our own literacy, such as suggesting that we should go to the library to read more books related to the general direction of our major, explore the general direction of our interest, and so on.
At the same time, the teacher also gave us some suggestions on how to adapt to college life as soon as possible. For example, we can go to bed as early as we can to provide enough energy for the next day's study and life, achieve balanced nutrition and reduce the impact of acclimatization on us. And the teacher also shares her own anecdotes about getting along with students... The dinner was full of laughter and owns a warm atmosphere.
In the meeting with the friend of freshmen, not only did we deepened the understanding of professional learning, but also had more understanding of university life, so that we are full of expectations for the future, and more clearly see the direction of future efforts. Our four students in room 524 are full of gratitude to our teacher.
On the evening of October 9th, after a busy day, Teacher Shao Xueming walked into the entrance of Building 7 of Yuhu with full energy. He was greeted by four classmates from Room 641 of Building 7, who accompanied him into the mentor's office and handed him a cup of hot coffee.
Although the roommates had already communicated extensively with the "The Friend of Freshmen", they were still a bit nervous for the first meeting. With his enthusiasm and sincerity, Teacher Shao gradually broke through this barrier. He asked the students not to call him "teacher" , but rather treat him like a neighbor. He also kindly inquired about their hometowns, filling their hearts with warmth, and gradually the conversation opened up.
"I asked the teacher many questions about choosing a major, but he told me not to worry and patiently explained the current situation and prospects of various branches. This not only cleared my confusion, but also filled me with confidence to move forward," said Li Huanan from the class of engineering mechanics (Strong Foundation Program) 2301.
It is worth mentioning that two students from Room 641 are also from the class of chemistry (Strong Foundation Program) 2301. Faced with such a "double-disciplinary" dormitory, Teacher Shao gave many universal suggestions regarding studying."Although the teacher's research field is not directly related to our major, Teacher Shao's advice on our study methods in our first year has been very beneficial to me," echoed the two chemistry classmates.
University study is very different from high school, and Teacher Shao condensed his study strategies into eight words: "solid foundation, active learning." He inspired the students, emphasizing the importance of laying a solid foundation in the first two years of university, which will serve as the most solid and practical pillar of lifelong learning. He also encouraged the students to seek various sources of information and actively engage in learning, cultivating the habit of self-study in the abundant spare time during university years. This way, university life will not only leave us with a colorful campus experience but also instill lifelong beneficial qualities.
