In the afternoon of Aug.18th, the first "Qiushi (meaning "seek the truth") Science Class" was officially opened. In the opening ceremony, President Yang Wei presented offers for the head teachers of the five classes. They are Zhang Ting, Zhu Ping, He Qiaohong, Wu Min and Bao Hujun. Lai Maode, vice-president of Zhejiang University, Zheng Qiang, deputy party secretary, and Chen Jin, undergraduate courtyard executive director, attended the opening ceremony.

    Eighty students are selected from students who have priority to be recommeded for admission to school and students who pass the college entrance examination into the Qiushi Science Classes. They are talented and interested in a certain science subject, and are willing to devote themselves into a career of mathematics or science. They can also stand the loneliness of meditation. When interviewing them, our school focused on selecting the students with excellent abilities, right attitude, personality and spirit of questioning. President Yang Wei put forward four requirements for science classes in the opening ceremony.

    Firstly, it is necessary to establish students’ own personalities. The second is to ignite the passion of students and the third is to have firm confidence. The last one is to create an atmosphere of critical thinking. Mr. Yang Wei told the students that their potential was way better than any other session strategically but they needed to start step by step tactically. In the future, students in Qiushi Science Class will receive "high, precise, advanced" training. Our school will implement "precise, deep, comprehensive" research-based teaching. Each student will host at least one SRTP project.

    Under tutor’s instruction, they will participate in research projects and try to write academic papers. They will also go to study abroad for no less than 5 months during the four undergraduate years. Our school runs the Class open. Anyone that isn’t able to adapt to the training mode will be eliminated. At the same time, outstanding students of the whole university can be admitted to the Class.
